Microsoft’s Live Labs team has introduced an experimental prototype application codenamed “Pivot”.

"Pivot" is an application developed on a .NET client. It's aimed at simplifying interactions with massive amounts of data. It's kind of a visual search which works in a data set. It links to the mass data deeply and give a much batter targeted data stream to user.

Example: If you have 50,000 magazine covers and you're looking for only music covers, it will sort out only music covers. In particular, if you're looking for only female pop star covers, you can do that, too. It will search much deeper to give a much more accurate result. It can be linked to any kind of data and represents it to you in visual form.

It's much better seen than described in words, just like the search itself. Just check out the Microsoft video (Silverlight required) and afterwards head over to the Pivot site to absorb all the technical details:

This prototype is currently available by invitation only from Microsoft’s download site.

Update: I'm having 10 Beta invites for Giveaway!, Just comment here and you'll get the invites :)

PubSubHubbub protocol, which turns feeds into real-time streams and recently Google Reader has started rolling out support for PubSubHubbub and readers like FriendFeed, Livedoor Reader (a feed reader popular in Japan), and FavIt already support PubSubHubbub

So what it means?

When you post in Blogger, your posts will surface in real time in Google Reader or other that support this protocol. Best of all, your blog is already broadcasting updates so you don't need to do anything to enable it, it will appears in real time in above readers. See the demo in the Embed Video.

All blog post feeds now contain a "hub" element, and will ping Google's hub on every post update. If you're a developer writing code to monitor feeds and want to get updates efficiently in near real-time, you just need to detect the hub link and subscribe to the hub server. Then, sit back and let the hub push updates to you.

Digg rolled out new major updates to their dupe detection technology and content submission process. Mainly aim to eliminating duplicate submissions on digg.com

So what the hake dupe detection technology after all? Let's see. As you know Digg.com getting new stories that is based on users. Most common are the same stories from the same site, but with different URLs that is submitted by different digg users. so to analyzed the types of duplicate stories being submitted, Digg's R&D team came up with a solution that identifies these types of duplicates by using a document similarity algorithm. According to Digg, it has proven to be a reliable way of identifying identical content from the same source.

Another common type of duplicate is the same or similar story covered on different sites. so when user submit the content it was hard to find the duplicates, because the same content cumming from different sources and Because this enters more subjective territory, Digg focused on doing a better job at detecting dupes with similar descriptive information. By help of Digg’s improved search technology which released a couple months back Digg now able to match stories with similar titles and descriptions with much higher accuracy than before.

So with the combination of Digg's dupe detection and search technology now the site able to get and identify more comprehensive and unique content from users. To do this digg made changes to its submission process

While in pilot, the new dupe detection system will continue to only block submissions of the exact same URLs within a 30-day period. Digg also monitoring when certain Diggers choose to bypass high-confidence duplicates and will use this data to continue to improve the process going forward.

Digg gonna highlight how it works for its dupe detection technology in a separate tech blog post later.

Today Google Launches directory of OpenSocial Apps with verity of 12505 apps available.

Google is behind the OpenSocial & it's vs Facebook Platform which is also a successful for developers and users. Here OpenSocial can gain much more development because it aimed to give developers a common& Open environment that application publishers could develop & publish widgets to with one set of code, deplorable across Google sites, MySpace, Hi5, Netlog, Orkut and numerous other social networks.

Right now OpenSocial having 12505 Apps in the portfolio led by MySpace 8620, Orkut 2517, H5 1252, Ning 249 & Netlog with only 10 apps with different category like Business, Dating, Music, Video, Photos, Utilities, Sports, Travel, Games & Events

OpenSocial would allow for user data to be transmitted from one site to another. But it's not data portability that all thinking. It's just App portability that developers can deploy in different websites. Of course open Technologies like oAuth, OpenID are adopted by leading companies so OpenSocial.

Lots of things are happening via OpenSocial. Google led the Google Friend Connect & Google profile which is created on Open Social Platform.

Google Suggest, which gives suggestions as we're typing our searches.since it saves time by giving suggestions for our searches.

Today Google Provides new features to Google Suggest.

Suggestions on the results page
Previously, Google only showed suggestions based on your original search input. Now, when you make a search from a results page, Google will provide suggestions that relate to the current results page. As you can see in the example below, if your previous search was for "roller coasters", when you begin a new query the first few suggestions are still related to roller coasters This feature helping you refine your search queries to quickly find what you want. I also try to search for "missing link found" & try to refine it on the current result page but it didn't work for me.

(Suggestions on the results page)

Personalized suggestions
Now, if you're signed in with your Google account and have Web History enabled, Google may show some of your relevant past searches as you type& it will give you personalized suggestions. It will make it easier and faster for you to repeat searches that have worked before. Or, if you need to step away in the middle of a search task, this will help you continue your search tasks at a later time.

Many people don't like Google's personalized service, If you think that there is no privacy in this then you can remove a personalized suggestion that you do not like by clicking "Remove", which will remove the search from your Web History. You can also remove searches from your Web History directly & manage Query Suggestions on the preferences page, or sign out of your Google account entirely to stop seeing personalized suggestions.

(Personalized suggestions)

Navigational suggestions
When you try to search something & your first keywords that mach to specific site then Google will list it and send you directly on that website if you click there. See the below example which show direct link to NASA website in suggestions when try to type "kennedy space center"

(Navigational suggestions)

Sponsored links in suggestions
Now Google also find a another space for it's sponsored links. Similar to the navigational suggestions above. Google will show sponsored link in suggestions according to relevant keyword you type and if it's mach. When an ad is shown, To identify it, Google mark it with the text "Sponsored Link" and a colored background, as on the results page. see the below example.

(Sponsored links in suggestions)

There are few changes in Google Suggest apart of above, Now Google will no longer show the result count for items in the suggest box because Google is getting feedback that the numbers were not helpful in comparing the relevance of the queries and another change is, Now Google bold the text of suggestions to help you more quickly scan the suggestion list.
In partnership with Google, New York City has a new website and Information Center to help make it easier for both visitors and residents to explore all the energy, excitement and diversity of New York City's five boroughs. nycgo.com is the official resource on the web for all there is to see, do and experience in the City. This dynamic site uses Google Maps to help you plan your New York experience and find hotels, restaurants and entertainment, in addition to exclusive citywide savings and promotions. With nycgo.com you can use Google Maps to get directions to attractions throughout the City, and even send the info to your phone with Google Maps for mobile.

While you're in New York, stop by the brand new Official New York City Information Center at 810 Seventh Avenue, between 52nd and 53rd Streets. The Information Center features interactive map tables, powered by the Google Maps API for Flash, that let you navigate venues and attractions as well as create personalized itineraries, which can be printed, emailed or sent to mobile devices. Additionally, there's a gigantic video wall that utilizes Google Earth to display a 3D model of New York City on which you can map out personalized itineraries.

As a webmaster, you have a unique understanding of your web pages and the content they represent. Google helps users find your page by showing them a small sample of that content -- the "snippet." for that they use a variety of techniques to create these snippets and give users relevant information about what they'll find when they click through to visit your site. Today, Google is announcing Rich Snippets, a new presentation of snippets that applies Google's algorithms to highlight structured data embedded in web pages.

Rich Snippets give users convenient summary information about their search results at a glance. . When searching for a product or service, users can easily see reviews and ratings, and when searching for a person, they'll get help distinguishing between people with the same name.

It's a simple change to the display of search results, by this users will find the new valuable data & if they see useful and relevant information from the page, they are more likely to click through. Google is beginning the process of opening up this successful experiment so that more websites can participate.

As a webmaster, you can help by annotating your pages with structured data in a standard format. By incorporating standard annotations in your pages, you not only make your structured data available for Google's search results, but also for any service or tool that supports the same standard. As structured data becomes more widespread on the web,
Friend List let you group friends to more easily share with and view information from specific sets of people. You already can use them to filter your home page, send Inbox messages and manage privacy settings.

Now it comes to Facebook Chat also which provide ways to organize your connections and to control which friends see you online. Maybe you want to be online with your best friends but offline with your work colleagues. You can now do that by using Friend Lists to filter your connections in Chat.

To do that, From the bottom right corner of your browser, go online with Chat and choose which lists you'd like to include in the Chat pane. You can use your existing lists or create new lists directly from Chat. Earlier you had to completely turn off Facebook chat in order to hide your online status from other contacts.

Alongside each list, you'll notice a green switch; when you turn off the switch, you'll be logging off of Chat for that list. Friends in lists that are switched off will not be able to see that you are online or chat with you, nor will you be able to see whether they are online.

In other IM networks like in yahoo chat you can hide your status but you can see your friends status if he or she sharing its online status but in facebook if you hiding your status then you also not able to see which friends are online which seems to me odd.

To create a new list, simply select the "Friend Lists" menu on the Chat pane, enter a new list name, and drag the names of people you want to include into the list or you can create list form your friends page

Facebook Notifications let you know when people take actions on Facebook related to you, so you can quickly know when your friend tagged your in a photo or read a new posting on your Wall. They already are available from your home page or from the notifications icon within the Facebook Chat bar at the bottom of your browser, but from now you able to know i mmediately when your friends are sharing something new with you.

So when you are online with Facebook Chat, entire notifications will appear automatically and in real time above the Chat bar as pop-up alerts. After a few seconds, the notification will automatically disappear, but you'll still be able to see a list of all of your notifications when you click on the notifications icon. You'll also continue to see a count of all the notifications you've not yet viewed, indicated in red.

You can turn off specific types of notifications if you don't want to receive them. When a notification appears, click the "X" to close it. You then will be asked if you want to permanently turn off future notifications of that same type. For example, if you choose to permanently delete a notification about posted links, you won't receive any future notifications about posted links from your friends.

Recently Facebook rolled out live updates for streaming which streams news feeds in real time & now a days all web companies focusing in real time updates.

Tumblarity is a great way to find data related to your blog & personally I like (I like the iPhone App too) it a lot. It shows your follower count, posts counts, numbers of likes and reblogs, and the kinds of posts you make. & you'll also get ranking.

Share your Google Latitude location as your status message with all of your Google Talk or Gmail chat contacts, including anyone that can already chat with you so it will Automatically updates your status message with your current city's name as you move. What it means?

Simply if you're in New York then in your Google Talk, it will show the city name which is New York as a Status message.

But here, Your current city is shared with all of your Google Talk or Gmail Chat contacts openly so even if you hide from some of them in Google Latitude it will not work. The Google Public Location Badge lets you publish your Latitude location on your blog or website. You can choose to show just the city that you are in or you can have your device's location detected automatically, using GPS, Wi-Fi, or cell tower ID, which provides a more specific location. Here also your location will be shared publicly and you will not be able to control who can or cannot see it.

Don't wanna share your location?

Here also your location will be shared publicly and you will not be able to control who can or cannot see it. here the case is different. To stop sharing location the only way is that you disable the badge entirely or change its settings by going to http://www.google.com/latitude/apps/badge

But Once you create and publish the embedded badge HTML code on your website, anyone with access to your website could copy the code elsewhere so that your location is still accessible even after you remove the code from your site so to stop publicly broadcasting your location, you must go back to http://www.google.com/latitude/apps/badge and disable it as I already said and you may also want remove the code or feed from your site or application.

Panda Security, publishers of Panda Internet Security and Panda Antivirus, bring up clouds Antivirus. Panda Cloud Antivirus for window user, Right now it's in Beta& Panda's willing to make the client free for personal use, even after it leaves beta testing.

On demand scanning from Panda Cloud Antivirus

The program uses Panda's proprietary cloud computing technology, which they call "Collective Intelligence", to detect viruses, malware, rootkits, and heuristics. It takes advantage of "millions of users," according to Panda, to identify new malware almost in real time. Panda says that Collective Intelligence can classify new malware in under six minutes, and that it handles more than 50,000 new samples per day. The Cloud Antivirus works by classifying threats into executables that must be scanned immediately, and non-executables that are checked at a lower priority when the computer is idle.

Panda decided to offer the Panda Cloud Antivirus for free, in exchange for using consumer data to build the Collective Intelligence database, said Pedro Bustamante, senior research adviser at Panda Security.

The new program reportedly takes up around 50 MB on the hard drive and eats around 17 MB of RAM when in use. That compares well against the industry average that Panda provided of 60 MB, and Bustamante said that they're aiming for 12 MB of RAM when in use.

Cloud computing may make sense from a system resources point of view, but what happens to system security when the computer isn't connected to the Internet? "The model we've implemented is to break down the traditional antivirus to client and server, so when the user is not connected they keep a local cache copy of Collective Intelligence, including detections for what Collective Intelligence sees is spreading through the community," he said.

Panda Cloud Antivirus is for Windows XP and Windows Vista, with planned support for Windows 7 when it's released. Bustamante added that it will stay in beta as it's being accepted by users, although they hope it will leave beta by the end of this summer.

When working on a spreadsheet together with others, sometimes it's handy to allow some people to modify specific sheets but restrict them from modifying other sheets. Google bring up a feature called "Protect Sheet" in Google Docs where user can protect the sheet by allowing editing authority.

an additional layer of control over who can edit individual sheets, using the list of people invited as collaborators. If you want to restrict your collaborators from editing specific sheets of your spreadsheet, you can protect those sheets in your workbook. To protect a sheet, click the sheet's tab at the bottom of your spreadsheet (next to Add sheet button) which will bring up the menu, and select Protect sheet. You will also able to allow different people for different spreadsheet.
  • Any collaborator can edit the sheet
  • Only you can edit
  • You and specific collaborators can edit

Your collaborators and viewers will still be able to view the data on the protected sheet, but depending on the permission you set for each sheet, they won't be able to make any changes or delete a protected sheet.Sheet protection is a great way to add a little fine control over the contents of your spreadsheets.
Google launched a new search feature that makes it easy to find and compare public data. If you go to Google.com and type in unemployment rate or population followed by a U.S. state or county, you will see the most recent estimates like this:

Once you click the link, you'll go to an interactive chart that lets you add and remove data for different geographical areas.

You can find interesting public data available on the web. There are statistics for prices of cookies, CO2 emissions, asthma frequency, high school graduation rates, bakers' salaries, number of wildfires, and the list goes on.
