when I was student I was really like to use my computer for project notes rather then writing note, At that time Gmail was there but in HTML version, Google Docs wasn't there so I was using Microsoft office 2003 & later 2007 & think free for online docs. I was using yahoo mail & chat for communication after that Gmail with AJAX interface. Browser I was using was IE & Firefox version 1 & 2 & Opera. For search and reference i was using Google Search and Wikipedia. But now the time is changed. Lots of & lots of tools available for enhancing the study and boost your productivity in study for batter results.To fulfill the gap, Google come up to help students & researchers with its bunch of tools & tips. here you can use the Google Search for Research your papers with Google Book Search and get authoritative sources Google Scholar lets you search across millions of papers, theses, abstracts, and academic articles.
Use Google Docs for coloration with your class met & teachers, Gmail & Google Talk for communication & Google Sites for wiki, Youtube & Picasa for visualize your study. Google knol & wikipedia for refrence.
Here you can use other tools like Evernote for note taking & zotero, a Firefox add on for your academic research. Student can use Open Office which is free & grate alternative of Microsoft Office. Zoho is also very good for student which provide many set of tools.
